“McFerrin lives and breathes vocal jazz”—London Jazz News
Bobby McFerrin has been staging the most peaceful of musical revolutions for decades. The 10-time Grammy-winner continuously blurs the distinction between pop music and fine art, goofing around barefoot in the world’s finest concert halls, exploring uncharted vocal territory, and inspiring a whole new generation of a cappella singers and the beatbox movement. His latest album, spirityouall, is a bluesy, feel-good recording, an unexpected move from the music-industry rebel who singlehandedly redefined the role of the human voice with his a cappella hit Don’t Worry, Be Happy. Following that early career ear worm, his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea and the Vienna Philharmonic have defined his recent decades of defying all expectations.
The soulful songs of the Gullah culture are brought to life by Ranky Tanky, a band of native South Carolinians who mix the low country traditions with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B. The group will be joining Bobby McFerrin as his band for this entire tour.
Opening the performance will be the Vermont All State Jazz Ensemble. The group is made up of some of the finest young jazz musicians in the state of Vermont. Auditioning in the Fall, the selected students then perform throughout the spring, culminating in an annual performance at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival.
