“A brooding, impressionistic journey into the depths of abstraction.”—Village Voice
Forty years have been good to BassDrumBone. Rather than diffuse the trio’s dynamic verve, time has distilled their sound to its raw essence, a powder keg of tight sparsity and quirk. Since the late ‘70s, the trio has teased the line between improvisation and composition, writing what sound like musical scores to the most invigorating of daydreams. On their new record, The Long Road, the players balance their notes on intuition with the type of conversational foresight that only old friends know. Drummer Gerry Hemingway and bassist Mark Helias build sparse, disorienting landscapes that Ray Anderson’s manic trombone monologues amble through. Downbeat and NPR jazz critic Kevin Whitehead are fans. Intermittent performers, BassDrumBone are a special rarity to welcome to our FlynnSpace confines.
